Why is an app usually the wrong choice?
Because every hurdle costs you guests. Someone sitting at your table wants to see the menu, not install something, sign up and allow notifications. Then there's the ongoing work: an app exists for iPhone and Android, it has to keep working with each new version, and the Apple Developer Program alone costs 99 US dollars a year before anyone has written a line of code.
For a large chain with customers coming daily, it can add up. For a café with one location, it almost never does.
What works without your own app?
| What you want | How it works without one |
|---|---|
| Stamp card | A card in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, apps guests already have. |
| Menu | A mobile page, opened by QR code or NFC sticker. |
| Bookings | A form on a web page, with the link on Google and Instagram. |
| Reaching regulars | Email with consent, or a note on the Wallet card. The rules are in our article on loyalty programmes and GDPR. |
Apple says in its developer guide that Wallet passes don't need a companion app and can be added by email or from a website. The guide dates from 2018 and some wording has changed, but the no-app route remains. For loyalty cards in Google Wallet, Google also lists web links, email and SMS, so no Android app of your own is required.
When does an app make sense?
- You have several locations and lots of guests who come back every week.
- Ordering and paying ahead is your core business.
- You have someone to look after it for good, not just to build it once.
If none of that applies, the money is better spent on the counter or in the kitchen. An app nobody opens won't help a single regular.
What should you do instead?
Start with a single page that holds everything: menu, opening hours, reviews, stamp card. Make sure guests don't have to install anything or remember a password for it. For how the card looks to guests, see loyalty cards in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet. For what software a café actually needs, see the best system for cafés.
How does a stamp card get onto a phone without an app?
In the NFCeez app you design the card once: colours, symbol, logo and up to three rewards. Guests tap the stamp card on your Smart Page, confirm their email with a code and add the card to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. When they visit, you scan the card in the app and confirm the stamp. The limit: there's no ordering or paying ahead. For that, as above, an app of your own can pay off. More on the digital stamp card.
Your next step: write down what you wanted the app for, and cross off everything in the table above. If nothing's left, you have your answer.
