# How does your restaurant get found on Google and ChatGPT?

What the companies actually document, what nobody outside them knows, and the work that's worth doing anyway. As of November 2026.

[Google and AI](https://nfceez.de/en/blog/topic/google/) 6 min read Updated 2 November 2026 NFCeez editorial team

The short answer

A restaurant is found on Google mainly through relevance, distance and prominence, Google says, and the exact weighting is secret. A verified, complete Business Profile, genuine reviews and a page with your menu as text all help. Google's AI answers have no special requirements. Nobody outside these companies can promise that ChatGPT or any other AI assistant will recommend a restaurant.

Almost everything written on this topic is selling something: an agency, a tool, a secret formula. So this article starts with an honest split. Some of it is documented, much of it isn't, and we'll tell you which is which.

## What is actually known about ranking on Google and in AI answers?

The basics are documented, the weighting isn't. Nobody outside these companies knows the exact ranking, and Google says as much itself.

What's known What nobody outside knows

Local results depend mainly on relevance, distance and prominence ([Google](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7091?hl=en)) How much each factor counts. Google keeps the details confidential

You can't pay for a better local ranking on Google ([Google](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7091?hl=en)) Exactly why one place sits above another today

AI Overviews and AI Mode have no extra requirements ([Google](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features)) When an AI answer will name a specific place

A site that blocks ChatGPT's search crawler won't appear in its search answers ([documentation](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots)) How ChatGPT picks restaurants. We found no documentation of that

Keep this in mind for every offer that lands in your inbox: [Google says](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide) no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems. So anyone promising "number one in ChatGPT" is promising something they can't deliver. And even if you do everything right, Google says indexing and serving aren't assured.

## How does Google decide which restaurant shows up in local search?

Google says local search rests mainly on three factors. You can influence two of them.

Factor What Google says it means What you can do

Relevance How well a profile matches the search Right category, complete details, a menu

Distance How far you are from the person searching Nothing, beyond a correct address

Prominence How well known you are, including links and reviews Genuine reviews, mentions and links from local sites

Google names verification, complete details and photos. It also says [categories](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7249669?hl=en) affect local ranking. The exact clicks are in our [Google Business Profile guide](https://nfceez.de/en/blog/google-business-profile-for-restaurants/).

## Do Google's AI answers need anything special?

No, Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode need no special optimization. [Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) says you don't need special schema.org markup or new files. A page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. [Google's guide](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide) adds that an llms.txt file neither helps nor harms in Google Search, and nobody has to chop text into tiny pieces.

Two statements from that guide are directly useful:

- Generative answers can include information about local businesses, and Business Profiles can help you be visible in them.

- Seeking inauthentic mentions around the web doesn't help as much as it might seem. First-hand experience beyond common knowledge counts for more.

According to [Gemini's help page](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/16622866?hl=en), the Gemini app also uses public Google Maps information and can give addresses, websites, ratings and opening hours. So what's wrong on your profile can be wrong there too. [Google says](https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/17104441?hl=en) AI Mode can check dining reservations and may even call businesses that have little information online. That's currently for signed-in adults, in English.

## How does a restaurant get into ChatGPT?

We found no application or paid slot for restaurants in ChatGPT, and nobody can promise a mention. What's documented is technical: [OAI-SearchBot](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots) is ChatGPT's search crawler. If it's blocked, your site won't be shown in search answers, though it can still appear as a plain link. GPTBot is something else: it collects content for training.

For you, that means:

- Check that your website allows OAI-SearchBot in its robots.txt. If you have your own site, you can look at your-address.com/robots.txt.

- Put your details in normal text: address, hours, cuisine, menu. There's no evidence this brings more mentions in ChatGPT, but people and machines can both read it.

- Try it yourself: ask "Where's good brunch in [neighbourhood]?" and "Is [name] open on Sundays?". Answers vary, so treat it as a spot check. If facts are wrong, first see whether they're wrong somewhere on the web.

## What does Apple Maps do for a café?

iPhone users search Apple Maps too, and you can manage your own listing there. With [Apple Business](https://business.apple.com/) you claim your location and control your logo, hours, images and key details. Apple [introduced its predecessor, Business Connect, in 2023 as a free tool](https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2023/01/introducing-apple-business-connect/) and also named Siri and Wallet as places that information appears. It's quick to do and easy to forget.

## Does structured data help you get found?

Structured data helps machines read your page, but it doesn't assure any visibility. Google says outright that it [doesn't promise](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/local-business) features using this data will show up.

Property What it holds Source

Restaurant Your type of business, a subtype of LocalBusiness [schema.org](https://schema.org/Restaurant)

servesCuisine Your cuisine schema.org, recommended by Google

menu Full address of your menu Recommended by Google, schema.org now lists hasMenu for it

acceptsReservations Yes, No or a reservation address schema.org

openingHoursSpecification Opening hours schema.org

The data has to match your visible text. Without your own website or web person, this isn't a priority. Profile and reviews come first.

## Where do you start if you only have an hour?

You'll get the most from what Google itself names. This list fits into one quiet morning:

Minutes Task Why

10 Verify your profile or check your access Google names verification explicitly

10 Check name, category, address, phone, website Relevance and correct details

10 Confirm hours and holidays Maps and AI answers can show them

10 Link or upload your menu Guests look for it, Google counts the clicks

10 Add your review link to the receipt [Reviews](https://nfceez.de/en/blog/how-to-get-more-google-reviews/) count toward prominence, Google says

10 Read your search terms under Performance Shows your guests' [actual words](https://support.google.com/business/answer/9918094?hl=en)

Then comes the slow part: a piece in the local paper or a listing with the weekly market or a local club brings real links and mentions. Our article on [marketing on no budget](https://nfceez.de/en/blog/restaurant-marketing-on-no-budget/) has ideas. Buy none of it, reviews least of all: the [Maps policy](https://support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/7400114?hl=en) bans paid reviews.

## How can you tell if anything is changing?

Measure what you can instead of guessing at rankings. Under Performance, Google shows views, calls, direction requests, website clicks and menu clicks, plus monthly search terms. Comparing search results alone won't tell you much, since they differ with the searcher's location.

## How do you get your menu and details online as text, without your own website?

With NFCeez you add your business in the app with its name and address, then your opening hours, including holidays and special days, your links and the link to your Google review. You take photos of your menu or upload a PDF. The AI turns it into dishes with prices and categories, and you check everything before it goes online. The result is your Smart Page at nfceez.de, followed by your business name. You enter that address on your Google profile as your website or menu link.

The app then shows whether visits come from Google, Instagram, NFC, QR code or direct, over 7, 30 or 90 days, and which searches in your menu found nothing. If "gluten-free" keeps coming up empty, you know which note your menu is missing.

The limit: nobody can promise that Google or an AI will name your place more often because of it, NFCeez included. You still look after your Google profile yourself. The [Smart Page overview](https://nfceez.de/en/features/smart-page/) shows what the page looks like.

## What do you do today?

Your next step: open your profile today, look at last month's search terms under Performance, and check whether your page answers exactly those words.

[ How NFCeez does this Your menu as text, at one fixed address. The AI turns a photo of your menu into dishes with prices. You add the address to Google, and the app shows how many visits come from there. See how it works ](https://nfceez.de/en/features/smart-page/) Sources

## Questions about visibility on Google and AI.

No. Nobody outside these companies knows the exact selection, and Google says no third-party tool has access to its systems. We found no documented route to a fixed place in ChatGPT.

Not for the organic local ranking. Google says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.

Not for Google. Google says such a file neither helps nor harms visibility in Google Search.

That isn't documented. What is documented is Google's Gemini app using public Maps information. For ChatGPT, all that's certain is that a blocked site won't appear in its search answers.

The verified Google profile first, since it feeds Search and Maps. A page with your menu and hours as text is the next step.

Local search depends partly on distance from the person searching. Two people in two places see different results.
